Raising Global Citizens: How to Raise Children Who Embrace Diversity

Raising culturally sensitive children in Canada is important to promote understanding and acceptance of different cultures within our communities. As parents, you're the primary role model for your children, so it's important to model the behavior you want to see in them.

Here are some tips to help raise children who embrace diversity.

First and foremost, lead by example. Show your children through your actions and interactions with people from different cultures that you value and respect diversity. Encourage your child to learn about and explore different cultures through books, movies, music, art, and food. Participate in community groups and organizations that celebrate different cultures and take your child to events and festivals where they can learn more.

It is also important to discuss prejudice and discrimination with children. Talk openly with your child about why it is harmful and provide examples of how to recognize and speak out against prejudice in everyday life. Share your own experiences with prejudice, if any, and explain how to recognize and speak out against prejudice in everyday life.

Teach your child to understand and acknowledge their privilege, especially if they come from a dominant culture. Encourage them to use their privilege to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Being open to learning and others' perspectives is important to raise a culturally sensitive child. Remember to admit when you are wrong or have made a mistake, rather than being defensive and unwilling to learn.

Finally, encourage your child to participate in culturally diverse community services. It can be a great way for them to learn about other cultures and make a positive impact on the community.

Teaching cultural sensitivity is an ongoing process, and it is not a destination but a journey for both parents and the child. Remember to make it a positive and fun experience for both of you.

What's your idea of raising culturally sensitive children?

Very informative.

Do you think it's important to send your children to motherland to learn the culture so they can get the full picture?

I actually don't think it's a necessity, that's why the parents are there, it's really about making it a priority to educate the kids on the culture. My perspective though.
