The rapid spread of mpox in many African countries, including places that have not previously been affected by the disease, has prompted both the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization to declare it a public health emergency. Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya declared the disease a public health emergency of continental security on Tuesday, while WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared it a public health emergency of international concern, or PHEIC, on Wednesday.
